Mallikarjun Kharge is a veteran politician who has been in Indian politics and is an important figure in the Indian National Congress. Kharge has had experiences and leadership qualities that have earned him various essential offices both in the state's political arena and at the national level. Currently, he serves as President of the Indian National Congress and succeeded Sonia Gandhi in 2022.
Kharge was born on July 21, 1942, in a small village in Karnataka. The 1960s saw a political beginning for him as he joined the Indian National Congress. He worked within the students' movement and climbed the party ranks more and more. He was dubbed a champion for Dalits and backward classes for holding significant sway in addressing woes affecting masses outside the circle.
Kharge has since personally serviced over the feature years in more than a few prized state legacies and with Parliament. A member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly for 41 years, he also served as Minister of Labor and Employment in the state. His tenure was known for improvements in labor laws, addressing the sufferings of the workers, as well as schemes to uplift education and health for downtrodden people.
Kharge's influence began to erupt on the national stage in the year 2009 when he was elected a Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Gulbarga constituency in Karnataka. His fast track to prominence took him along the glory trail of serving as an Union Minister for Railways as well, making efforts toward modernization and an updating of India's rail infrastructure. Kharge's approaches to governance have always been practical with a focus on inclusive development and social welfare.
Now in 2022, Kharge has been elected the new President of the Indian National Congress following a long-overdue election in the party. Another chapter of party leadership is opened now. Presumably, with his long-absorption into politics, his leadership would be unifying by virtue of being heady for the core values that Congress stands upon: secularism, democracy, and social justice.
Kharge has a political journey, in which it has all the flavors of resilience and service to the public. He is going to be the completely committed and staunch member of Congress, which will be consistent between tradition and future-looking approach to Indian politics.
